On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig released over 130 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It was the largest oil spill in U.S. waters and one of the worst environmental disasters in world history. Eleven rig workers lost their lives. Millions of marine mammals, sea turtles, birds, and fish also perished. While the world watched, oil seeped into one of the most diverse marine habitats for 87 long days. This spill likely harmed or killed about 82,000 birds from 102 species, approximately 6,165 sea turtles, 25,900 marine mammals, and numerous fish species (from large tuna to the smallest sea horse), as well as shellfish, crabs, coral, and other organisms.
