Three years ago, during the COVID-19 era, while reviewing the “Fell But Did Not Break” project and revisiting its concepts and progress, I pondered content related to people’s livelihoods. During this time, I was intensely involved with legal issues and frequently visited various courts and legal branches. The phrases “bread sorrow” and “livelihood issues,” as well as the term “a piece of bread,” became recurring keywords I encountered. Other terms like “wedding ceremony,” “wedding spread,” “prayer spread,” “traditional eatery,” and undesirable phrases heard during disputes in the streets such as “I’ll lay your stomach on the table,” “the heart isn’t a spread,” “open or don’t open your heart,” “they have a spread,” repeatedly presented issues for me.

In this journey, I realized the significance of the spread and decided to turn it into a project. Initially, it was supposed to be executed in the “Tom” gallery in Isfahan, but due to various reasons, it became impossible from the gallery’s side. After a year and a half, I discovered the “Mohi” gallery in Tehran through the efforts of friends. Unfortunately, the internal conflicts starting in 2022, along with the people’s and government’s actions and reactions, again led to the project’s dismantling and closure. Some artists withdrew due to the time lapse, and others couldn’t participate due to censorship or during the judging phase. Today, thanks to the support of Mr. Saeed Ravanbakhsh and the excellent team at the “Didar” gallery, this project is being exhibited.

The Importance of a Post-Exhibition Discussion for the Osfrit Project – Unit 8

The significance of holding a discussion following the exhibition of the Osefriti project – Unit 8 lies in examining the objectives of field research and addressing the topic of the “spread” from a social perspective, particularly in relation to contemporary art. The “Didar Gallery” provided an opportunity for this experiential and convergent project.

If an art exhibition does not engage in a dialogue with its audience afterward, it brings no educational value, and it is as if no one other than the artist and curator participated. The audience always creates new meanings and fresh tones.

The discussion was attended by:

  • Kianoosh Motaghedi – Writer, translator, and researcher
  • Behnam Kamrani – Visual artist and researcher
  • Ramin Saeidian – Art researcher
  • Ghazal Zare – Curator and multimedia artist

The session was held in February 2024.
